CRAFTING LAB INTERNSHIP

In the summer of 2022, I began my first design internship at The Crafting Lab, a digital solutions start-up in my city of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Here, I learned about the design process in a more corporate setting, as well as how varying disciplines combine with each other to produce a product that is practical while retaining a visually appealing appearance.

The Big Task

During the internship I was given a task to design a label for a Crafting Lab-branded beer. The patterns on the labels are inspired by the Thai names of each brew. The text in the middle are custom calligraphy of these names in Thai, with English subtitles surrounding it to give some basic information about the bottle's contents.

The central text was written and designed using Procreate, along with the patterns in the background using images found online and 3D models from SketchFab for reference. Procreate brushes allowed for more organic and intricate patterns within the lineart. Adobe Illustrator and Canva were used for the design of the subtitle text.

After a long day at work, don’t you just want to come home to a nice chilled bottle of beer? So you grab one from the fridge and crack it open–but wait… Do you smell that? The smokey sensation in the air? It’s as if a car had just broken down in the middle of your living room! Don’t worry, that’s just the signature smell of our classic home-brewed “Motor Mai”. Made from locally sourced ingredients, our soothing beverage will wash away all the worries of your day with the classic tastes of Chiang Mai.

Aren’t you tired of the same boring humdrum of everyday life? Don’t you want to kickstart your evening with something a bit brighter than the usual beers you’ll find on 7-Eleven shelves? Well look no more, “Hua Tian Board” is here to freshen up your night! Despite its name, our unique home-brewed taste is guaranteed to keep the spark going long after you finish the first bottle, then the second, and the third… before you know it the entire night has flown by in a flash!

Process

The small job

In addition to the main task I was given to design the beer bottle labels, I also helped out with smaller jobs around the office. One valuable experience I gained was in product photography. The Crafting Lab was hired to shoot and design a new many for a local restaurant. I was asked to help set up the photoshoot, and I learned a lot about photography equipment during this process.
