"Period!" is an app made to give menstuators easy access to affordable period products in public restrooms. Conceptualized in my gender studies class, the project was a collective effort of my classmates and I.
More about Period!
An exerpt from our proposal
Period! aims at making access to menstrual products more convenient for all menstruators by installing menstrual product dispensers outside bathrooms and in public places.
We are addressing issues of accessibility to menstrual sanitary products as well as the stigma surrounding menstruation. Our environment is not suited for our needs, it is difficult to access menstrual products in urgent cases and the cost of the products creates an additional financial burden for many menstruators, especially those with lower incomes.
We want to ensure that if a menstruator is on their period, they will have access to menstrual products quickly and easily without having to travel far from the bathroom and without straining their budget.
We will also provide an app that will display the locations of the dispensers and additional educational material about menstruation and reproductive health. To facilitate further education we will distribute educational material through social media and brochures.
Our products will be accessible to all menstruating people. To tackle the other facet of period poverty, regarding financial exclusion, products will be free for all individuals possessing a student status on their Octopus card. Later in our timeline, we will hand out vouchers for free access to products (to be redeemed by the app), to target marginalized communities such as the homeless population, and foreign domestic workers.
